<\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n\nKurunegala, Sri Lanka \u2013 12 August 2026<\/strong> \u2013 The second programme of the Kurunegala District \u2013 Ninth Chapter<\/strong> under the \u201cEmpower Her: Ensuring Equal Rights for Every Woman and Girl\u201d<\/em> initiative was successfully conducted on 12 August 2026<\/strong> at Pannawa Muslim Central College, Kurunegala District<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
The Legal and Human Rights Workshop for Women and Girls<\/strong> was organised under the leadership of Mr. Shantha Dalugamage<\/strong>, Founder and CEO of Stichting Mission Lanka<\/strong>, with generous financial support from the Embassy of the Netherlands in Sri Lanka and Maldives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More than 100 schoolgirls<\/strong> participated in the programme, gaining essential knowledge and practical understanding of human rights, child rights, gender sensitivity, and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Focus on Human Rights and Gender Equality<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
The workshop addressed several important areas, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n
- Human Rights<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Child Rights<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Gender Sensitivity<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
- SDG 5 \u2013 Gender Equality<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
The programme encouraged young participants to understand their rights and responsibilities while developing confidence to become active and responsible members of their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Connecting Human Rights with Environmental Protection<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Participants were also introduced to the international advocacy efforts of Stop Ecocide International<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The session highlighted the connection between human rights and environmental protection<\/strong>, encouraging young people to become responsible environmental stewards and contribute to a just, peaceful, and sustainable future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Legal Knowledge and Access to Justice<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Mr. N. L. A. Kalam<\/strong>, Attorney-at-Law and Regional Coordinator (Puttalam) of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka<\/strong>, served as the Resource Person for the workshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through informative presentations and practical guidance, participants gained greater awareness of legal rights, protection mechanisms, and available avenues for seeking justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Educational Resources for Young Leaders<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
At the conclusion of the programme, Certificates of Participation<\/strong> were awarded to all participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Educational book packs containing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)<\/strong> and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)<\/strong> were also distributed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The educational materials were provided through the support of United for Human Rights<\/strong> and Youth for Human Rights International<\/strong>, supporting continued learning and the development of future youth leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Community Collaboration<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
The programme was successfully coordinated by Mr. Sanka Jayanath<\/strong> and Ms. Anusha Indrajith<\/strong>, Programme Coordinators of Mission Lanka Foundation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Special appreciation was extended to the Principal, teachers, and students of Pannawa Muslim Central College<\/strong> for their warm hospitality and valuable support in hosting the initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Continuing the Empower Her Mission<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
The programme represents another important step in the expansion of the Empower Her<\/strong> initiative across Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through human rights education and community-based programmes, Mission Lanka Foundation<\/strong> continues to promote women’s rights, child rights, gender equality, environmental responsibility, and youth empowerment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By providing young girls with knowledge about their rights and opportunities, the initiative aims to contribute to a future where every woman and girl can live with dignity, equality, opportunity, and hope<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
