Vavuniya, Sri Lanka \u2013 17 July 2026<\/strong> \u2013 The second programme<\/strong> of the Vavuniya District \u2013 Eighth Chapter<\/strong> under the “Empower Her: Ensuring Equal Rights for Every Woman and Girl”<\/strong> initiative was successfully held at the Vengalacheddikulam Divisional Secretariat Auditorium<\/strong> in Vavuniya.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Legal and Human Rights Workshop for Women<\/strong> was organised under the leadership of Mr. Shantha Dalugamage<\/strong>, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Stichting Mission Lanka<\/strong>, with generous financial support from the Embassy of the Netherlands in Sri Lanka and the Maldives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme aimed to strengthen women’s understanding of their legal rights, promote gender equality, and encourage active participation in community leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Promoting Women’s Rights and Access to Justice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The workshop focused on several key themes designed to empower women through knowledge and awareness, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Gender Equality<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Legal Protection<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Access to Justice<\/li>\n\n\n\n

  • Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Participants explored practical approaches to protecting their rights and learned about available legal mechanisms and support services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Human Rights and Environmental Responsibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    A key feature of the programme was an introduction to the global advocacy work of Stop Ecocide International<\/strong>, highlighting the important connection between environmental protection and human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The session encouraged participants to become active community leaders committed to promoting justice, environmental responsibility, peace, and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    Building Stronger Communities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    More than 50 women<\/strong> actively participated in the interactive workshop, engaging in discussions, sharing personal experiences, and strengthening mutual support within their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The programme provided a platform for participants to increase their confidence, expand their legal knowledge, and develop leadership skills that contribute to positive social change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Expert Legal Guidance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The workshop featured Mr. N. L. A. Kalam<\/strong>, Attorney-at-Law and Regional Coordinator (Puttalam) of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka<\/strong>, as the Resource Person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Through practical presentations and discussions, he provided valuable insights on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Women’s legal rights<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Legal protection mechanisms<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Access to justice<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Human rights responsibilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Practical legal guidance for everyday situations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      His expertise enabled participants to better understand their rights and the legal support available to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n\n\n\n

      Certificates and Educational Resources<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      At the conclusion of the workshop:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • Certificates of Participation<\/strong> were awarded to all participants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Educational book packs containing the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)<\/strong> and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)<\/strong> were distributed through the generous support of United for Human Rights<\/strong> and Youth for Human Rights International<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        These resources will continue to support participants in expanding their knowledge and leadership within their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n\n\n\n

        Collaborative Community Partnership<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        The programme was successfully coordinated by Mr. Sanka Jayanath<\/strong> and Mr. Anusha Indrajith<\/strong>, Programme Coordinators of Mission Lanka Foundation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Special appreciation is also extended to the staff of the Vengalacheddikulam Divisional Secretariat<\/strong> for providing the venue and supporting the successful implementation of the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Continuing the Empower Her Journey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        The Empower Her<\/strong> initiative continues to expand across Sri Lanka, strengthening women’s rights, promoting gender equality, and increasing access to legal education and community empowerment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
