Vavuniya, Sri Lanka \u2013 16 July 2026<\/strong> \u2013 The Eighth District Chapter<\/strong> of the “Empower Her: Ensuring Equal Rights for Every Woman and Girl”<\/strong> initiative was officially launched with the successful completion of its first Legal and Human Rights Workshop<\/strong> at Cheddikulam Maha Vidyalaya<\/strong> in the Vavuniya District.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The programme was organised under the leadership of Mr. Shantha Dalugamage<\/strong>, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Stichting Mission Lanka<\/strong>, with generous financial support from the Embassy of the Netherlands in Sri Lanka and the Maldives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop brought together more than 100 schoolgirls<\/strong>, providing them with practical knowledge and a deeper understanding of their rights, leadership responsibilities, and the importance of building an inclusive and equitable society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Promoting Human Rights and Gender Equality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The workshop focused on strengthening awareness in several key areas, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Human Rights<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Child Rights<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Gender Sensitivity<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with special emphasis on SDG 5: Gender Equality<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Participants were encouraged to understand their rights, respect the rights of others, and become confident leaders capable of contributing positively to their schools, families, and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Environmental Responsibility and Global Citizenship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    As part of the programme, students were also introduced to the global advocacy efforts of Stop Ecocide International<\/strong>, highlighting the relationship between environmental protection and human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The session encouraged participants to become responsible environmental stewards and active citizens committed to building a peaceful, sustainable, and environmentally responsible future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Expert Guidance on Legal Rights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The workshop featured Mr. N. L. A. Kalam<\/strong>, Attorney-at-Law and Regional Coordinator (Puttalam) of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka<\/strong>, as the Resource Person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Through practical presentations and interactive discussions, he provided participants with valuable insights into:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Legal rights and protections<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Child protection mechanisms<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Human rights responsibilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Access to justice<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Available legal support services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      His sessions encouraged students to better understand how legal knowledge can empower individuals and strengthen communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Supporting Future Leaders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      At the conclusion of the workshop:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Certificates of Participation<\/strong> were awarded to all participants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Educational book packs containing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)<\/strong> and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)<\/strong> were distributed through the generous support of United for Human Rights<\/strong> and Youth for Human Rights International<\/strong>, encouraging continued learning and youth leadership development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
        \n\n\n\n

        Collaborative Community Partnership<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        The programme was successfully coordinated by Mr. Sanka Jayanath<\/strong> and Ms. Anusha Indrajith<\/strong>, Programme Coordinators of Mission Lanka Foundation<\/strong>, whose dedication contributed significantly to the successful implementation of the initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Special appreciation is also extended to the Principal, teachers, and students of Cheddikulam Maha Vidyalaya<\/strong> for their warm hospitality and valuable support in hosting the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Continuing the Empower Her Mission Across Sri Lanka<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        The launch of the Eighth District Chapter<\/strong> represents another important milestone in the Empower Her<\/strong> initiative, further expanding access to human rights education, gender equality awareness, and youth empowerment throughout Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Through partnerships with schools, communities, and international organisations, Mission Lanka Foundation<\/strong> continues its commitment to promoting women’s rights, child rights, environmental responsibility, and sustainable community development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
