Mission Lanka Promotes Gender Equality Through Legal Awareness Programme


Stichting Mission Lanka successfully conducted a Legal and Human Rights Workshop in Badulla under the Empower Her initiative, empowering women through awareness, legal education, and gender equality advocacy.

Empower Her Strengthens Women’s Rights in Badulla Through Legal and Human Rights Workshop

As part of the Empower Her: Ensuring Equal Rights for Every Woman and Girl initiative, the Second Programme of the Badulla District – Fourth Chapter was successfully conducted on 13 February 2026 at the Mahiyanganaya Divisional Secretary’s Auditorium, Badulla, Sri Lanka.

This impactful Legal and Human Rights Workshop for Women was organized under the visionary leadership of Mr. Shantha Dalugamage, Founder & CEO of Stichting Mission Lanka, with generous support from the Embassy of the Netherlands in Sri Lanka & Maldives.

The programme was designed to strengthen awareness, knowledge, and empowerment among women by focusing on essential legal protections, human rights education, and leadership development.

Key Focus Areas

Participants engaged in interactive awareness sessions covering:

  • Women’s Rights
  • Gender Equality
  • Legal Protection
  • Access to Justice
  • Human Rights Awareness
  • Gender Sensitivity
  • Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • SDG 5: Gender Equality

Environmental Justice and Leadership Awareness

As part of the programme, participants were also introduced to the global Stop Ecocide Law advocacy initiative, highlighting the strong connection between:

  • Human Rights
  • Environmental Protection
  • Sustainable Development
  • Responsible Leadership

The workshop encouraged women to take active roles in building fair, peaceful, environmentally responsible, and resilient communities.

Community Participation

More than 50 women actively participated in the interactive workshop, contributing to:

  • Meaningful discussions
  • Experience sharing
  • Community dialogue
  • Collective learning
  • Leadership-building conversations

The event created a safe and empowering space for women to strengthen awareness and confidence.

Expert Resource Contribution

Special appreciation is extended to Mr. Chandrasiri Witharange, Regional Coordinator (Ampara) of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, who served as the programme resource person.

His practical legal guidance and expert insights provided participants with valuable knowledge on rights protection and access to justice.

Certificates and Educational Support

At the conclusion of the workshop:

  • All participants received Certificates of Participation
  • Educational book packs were distributed
  • Learning materials supported continued awareness, leadership, and empowerment
